About

In 1997, George Hanley established the George P. Hanley Foundation to make his vision for a better future a reality.
George began his philanthropic efforts in the 1980s sponsoring tuition for underinvested communities to attend St. Sabina Academy in Chicago. The George P. Hanley Foundation has given over $20 million to expanding scholarship and experiential learning for future generations.

The George P. Hanley Foundation collaborates with universities to create academic centers and institutes to fulfill its mission.

Team

George Hanley, President

George serves as a principal of Normandy Island, LLC (Miami, FL) Left Bank Capital (Nashville, TN) and R2 Companies (Chicago, IL).
Previously, he founded and operated the Hanley Group, a financial trading firm (acquired by StoneX) and was a member of the Chicago Board of Trade and Chicago Mercantile Exchange (now CME Group). During his more than 35 years in the trading business, George established himself as a leader and mentor in his field: providing training, education and resources to help scores of students and young professionals learn the trading business.
George serves on the Board of Trustees at the University of Dayton. Notable investments within the University of Dayton include:
-Hanley Trading Center (established in 2008) evolved into the Hanley ESG Investment Center in 2022.
-Hanley Sustainability Institute (established in 2014) the largest single gift in the school’s history.
George has lectured at NYU, Harvard Club of NYC, University of Notre Dame, University of Illinois, and University of Dayton. George graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.A. in Business Management.

Marc Schwartz, Director

Marc is a managing partner at Harrison & Held, LLP, in addition to his experience as the Chair of the Board of Directors at Loyola University Medical Center and Chair of the Board of Gotlieb Memorial Hospital. Also, Marc is a member of the Advisory Board of The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, a member of the IIT Chicago Kent Board of Advisors, and he has served as Midwest Regional Director for the Birthright Israel Foundation. Marc graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Illinois.

• Environmental Law & Policy Center – a Midwest-based non-profit environmental advocacy group that has shown strong leadership in supporting the development of clean renewable energy and energy efficiency, clean transportation and clean buildings
• Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) – a strong national environmental organization, we have supported Midwest initiatives including new carbon pollution rules, policies that embrace energy efficiency and new clean technologies, battling tar sands oil expansion and stopping new coal plants
• The Nature Conservancy – an environmental protection organization
• Acumen Fund – invests in companies, leaders, and ideas that are changing the way the world tackles poverty – we partner with the Energy Portfolio, which is opening doors through electrifying Western Africa, India and other areas with clean, safe and affordable energy
• Earth Rights International – Human and earth rights advocacy Group
• Global Fund for Women – a grantmaking foundation that advances women’s human rights in 170 counties worldwide by investing in women led-organizations and women’s collective leadership for change
• SHINE – a global campaign to mobilize foundations, faith groups and other mission-driven organizations to dedicate grants and investments to massively scale up funding for universal access to clean, affordable and reliable energy by 2030, a sustainable development goal.
• University of Dayton Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities of Service (ETHOS) – students participate in engineering service-learning projects across the globe, including Appalachia, Africa, Central America, Brazil, China and India, to foster sustainable development solutions
• University of Illinois Subsistence Marketplaces Initiative, Global Business Brigades and Enactus – the Hanley Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for students to participate in immersion service-learning trips in developing countries to bring about sustainable, social change – destinations have included India, Uganda, Tanzania, Mexico, Russia and Panama.
• Mobile Kitchen Classroom with Stone Barns Center – empowers high school students in New York to become food citizens for a new, healthy and sustainable food culture through a hands-on, semester-long program that culminates with a Mindful Meal project to spread the word
• Vote Everywhere (an Andrew Goodman Foundation program) – a national, non-partisan, civic engagement organization that trains student Ambassadors at university partners to register voters, bring down voting barriers, and tackle important social justice issues on their college campuses.
• Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) – provides entrepreneurship training and education programs to young people from low-income urban communities
• The Dayton Early College Academy (DECA) – a nationally recognized, non-traditional charter high school singularly focused on preparing first-generation urban students to go to college
• University of Dayton – Hanley Trading Center (est. 2008)
• University of Dayton Hanley Sustainability Institute (est. 2014) – this innovative institute extends sustainability education campus-wide by creating interdisciplinary curricula and experiential learning for undergraduates and graduates; enhancing faculty and student research; expanding community and corporate partnerships; and demonstrating best sustainability practices throughout campus operations. Here students can learn, lead and serve with the economy, environment and social justice in mind, and cross collaboration is key.
